TIMELINE PART 3:  From 1000 to 2000
BACK
Learn this in LAYERS.
Draw a Line.  Put "1000" at one end and "1900" at the other.
Start with the "CENTURY MARKERS" (Years ending in "00".)
Here is what the first "layer" is going to look like when it's done.
Mrs. M, how many "Century Markers" are there?
Six, and they're all clustered together at the far right.
So the first one is at 1400?
Yep.  And the first two are both "Renaissance" periods.  One is "Early" Renaissance" and the other is "High" Renaissance.  Please tell me you can figure out which one came first.
What goes at 1600?
Well, I was sixteen when I got my driver's license, and I wanted to buy a car but I couldn't.
Why not?
I was Baroque.
(groan)
Hey, do you want to groan at my puns, or do you want to never forget that the "Baroque" period started in 1600?  Now put "Baroque" at 1600 and let's move on.

How old do I have to be to get married?
Eighteen.   Isn't that Romantic?
(groan)
Ahem.  Just put Romantic at 1800, and keep moving.
What about "Modern" art?
Put it in at 1900.
1900?  That's 100 years ago!
Well, they called it Modern.  Learn to live with it.
Wait a minute, 1700 is blank!  What goes there?
Rococo.  And I have no way of remembering that, so I just fill in the other five and see where the hole is and put Rococo there.
Could we see that chart one more time?
Sure:

Now ADD in the "MID-Century MARKERS" (Years ending in "50".)
I made them GREEN, so you can tell them apart from the Century Markers.
Here is what the timeline is going to look like after you insert the Mid-Century markers.
Are the Mid-Century Markers all clustered together like the Century Markers were?
Nope.  Two are clustered at the FAR left, and three are clustered at the FAR right.  And one of them is all by itself in the middle.  But it's easy to remember where.  Keep reading.
The far left Mid-Century Mark would be at 1050, right?
Yes, and remember the chart on that other page, that started with the year "ZERO" and ended with 1050?  1050 was Romanesque, right?
So you have Romanesque showing on both charts?
Yep. It was where we left off the last time.
Okay, I put Romanesque at 1050.
Good.
You said there were two half-century markers clustered together at the far left.  What's the next one?
Gothic.  I don't have a hint to remember that one.  Just learn it.
What next?
Okay, you need to memorize this phrase:  MAN NEEDS REAL POPCORN.
Huh?
Just learn it.  "MAN NEEDS REAL POPCORN"
Okay ....
That stands for "MANnerism, NEoclassical, REALism, and POP Art."
Ummm.  Okay ...
Now you just need to put them in, in that order.
Where?
Put them in the four slots at the far right ... for now.
But only the last three belong clustered together, right?
Yep.  After you get them written in, you need to move "MANNERISM" one space to the left.  (That will leave one mid-century space empty between Mannerism and Neoclassical.)
Any way to remember which one to move?
Remember what I said at the beginning -- three Mid-Century Markers are clustered at the FAR right.  So the last three ("NEEDS REAL POPCORN") go at the FAR right, and "MAN" moves away one space, so "MAN" is the only one that ends up alone.  (There's a joke in there somewhere ...)
So the six Mid-Century Markers are in.  Could I see that chart one more time?
Sure:
Am I done?  Are those all the periods I need to know for this test?
(Hysterical laughter)

Dream on, kids.  Here's another chart.  I had to make it HUGE so you can see what I added at the bottom.  Notice this chart looks just like the one you just finished ... until you get past Realism.  See all those red entries?  You get to learn those.  And if you think I'm getting into THAT stuff, dream on.
